I’ll be honest with y’all, I don’t like to listen to recordings of my own shows. I am a harsh self-critic. I’ll try to, but immediately launch into saying terrible, terrible stuff about myself to myself. It’s intolerable. This is unfortunate because fans like live recordings and I should be sifting through the archives finding diamonds in the dust! There’s too much dust.
A recording of a show I did at Waterfront Records in Sydney from 1995 is my most popular release on Bandcamp. Hearing it makes my skin crawl. I put it up anyway. I can’t let me be in charge. But, as far as curating new live releases, I just can’t.
Meanwhile, there’s been a folder sitting on my desktop titled: LouBarlow-20181207_k_Mixed 2 . It’s been there so long I stopped noticing it.
. In early December 2018, I was on another solo ‘house’ show tour.

Adelle, toddler Izzy and I were in Southern California. They were ensconced in Glendale while I did various shows in and around L.A.. The show in San Pedro was extra special because I was playing a printshop opened by Raul Morales and his buddies. Raul was the drummer for Mike Watt’s Missingmen (along with Tom Watson on guitar) and played with me when I adopted them (minus Watt) as my touring band to support my Goodnight Unknown LP in 2010 or so. Traveling with Tom and Raul was my most favorite on-the-road experience. We had a wonderful time. I could go on and on about how much fun those guys were and how they legit devoted themselves to learning my tunes. I honestly think I became a better person just sharing space with them.
Raul invited me to play Calimucho Printshop and they set it up proper, folks. They made a T-shirt for the show. They made a poster. They had a great PA set-up. It was perfect. Raul doesn’t like Tom Petty so I did 2 Tom Petty covers especially for him.
To top it all off about week later I received a meticulous audio capture of the event, complete with pictures and an LP icon if I ever chose to release the recording on a digital format! Nate Pottker, you did me a solid. I downloaded the whole package, put the folder on my desktop (see screenshot above) and forgot about it…until now!
30 songs! Live!
If you have seen any of my recent (in the past 7 years) solo shows this would appear to be a typical one: talking, tuning, laughter, maybe some tears, all the stuff. If you haven’t seen me, check it out and then come check me out NOW ‘cause I’m way better these days. I’d like to think I’m improving all the time. That’s why I don’t like to listen to old shows. Why waste my time listening to that old model me? Ears forward!
